Our First DBA Game - AAR

Continuation from this post:

For our very 1st DBA game, both YS Oon and Dave generously provided us their DBA army miniatures for this game. Also thanks to YS Oon for guiding both of us as the game progresses.

Combatant :Hyiktsay – Ionian (Defender)
·      1 x Cavalry General
·      1 x Cavalry
·      10 x Spear
·      1 x Psiloi
Combatant: Eric – Timurids (Attacker)
·         1 x Cavalry General
·         5 x Cavalry
·         2 x Light Horse
·         1 x Bow
·         1 x Auxilia
·         1 x Psiloi

The chosen terrain includes a waterway placed on the right edge, while having a hill and marsh at the center of the playing area (represented by brown and green fabrics respectively.

Turn 1

On the right flank, the Timurid advanced its 2 light horse elements heading to the direction of the Ionian camp; only to meet their spearman.

In the center, Timurid main column moved forward; consisting of 4 cavalries  and 1 elephant, while having a psiloi entering the marsh at left flank.

Turn 2

The light horses charged into the lone Ionian spear element and lost, recoiling the supporting light horse and forcing the attacking light horse to flee.

Ionian later moved its cavalry unit to fortify that flank and it's lone spear was able to push the Timurid's recoiled light horse to the sea.

Turn 3

The Timurd general and another cavalry element moved into the right flank to be accompanied nearby by its bow element, gradually moving towards the hill.

On the left flank, the lone psiloi element had advance to the edge of the marsh.

Do pay attention of the fleeing light horse.

Turn 4

Timurid main column breaks off and converge into a smaller formation facing the Ionian spear wall, still within the supporting range of the psiloi at the left flank.

The lone light horse had further retreated towards the back end of the Timurid army.

Timurid general and a supporting cavalry attacked the unsupported Ionian cavalry. Resulting clash destroys it.

Later on, Ionian general moved its left and supports its lone spear, while expanding its spear wall column.

I would spend a total of 4 turns in moving the light horse from the right flank to the left and subsequently engaging the Ionian. Having low PIP roll and having to use 2 PIP to move do not help. To make matter worst, Hyiktsay was rolling 5's and 6's and burning those PIP.

Turn 5

At this juncture, the Ionian spear wall had expanded its column to incorporate its left flank’s elements into the main group and at the same time prevented any possible thrust into it's center. The Ionian would further increase the width of its spear wall and had covered a good majority of the area.

2 remaining cavalries from the main column moved towards the rear of the right flank. On the left flank, the auxilia joined up with the psiloi at the edge of the marsh.

Turn 6

The Timurid light horse had finally reached the left flank and stop short as an Ionian spear element breaks away from the spear wall.

Over at the other side, the Ionian charged in and attack the Timurid's right flank, pitting both generals.

The Timurid won that engagement having destroyed an Ionian spear and forcing recoils to the Ionian general and one other spear element.

By this turn, I managed to increase the right flank column size to accommodate 3 cavalry elements from 2 before the Ionian attack. Do note, I am having 1 of the cavalry element at the hill. The Ionian destroyed spear was facing this bad going cavalry.

Apologies as I forgot to take any picture of this engagement.

Turn 7

Timurid left flank capitalized on the lone Ionian spear element, engaged with its auxilia and supported by the light horse; proved too much for the Ionian spear, destroying it in the process.

Unable to take advantage at the right flank attributed to low PIP row and virtually having to use 2 PIP on each element at the left to move; beyond the general line of sight. Also, its more advantageous to attack on the left instead of right, the odds adds up~~!!

The woe of forgetting to take any overview picture of the battle continues……..

Turn 8

With both flanks virtually in the Timurid advantage, they moved in.

On the right flank, the Ionian general forced to recoil while the Timurid slaughtered its spear.

Ionian had better success at Timurid's left flank, forcing a deadlock.

With 4 Ionian elements destroyed, the Timurid emerged victorious: 4 vs 1
